Pharmacist Assistant Education Requirements And Career Info

Emphasis is placed on the interlocking roles of the regulated pharmacy technician and pharmacist. This course covers basic pharmacy information including dosage form, routes of administration, medical terminology, prescription abbreviations, drug development and good manufacturing practices. A current, official Criminal Record check and Vulnerable Sector check are required to complete work placements in this program. Inability to obtain a work placement will impact your ability to complete program and graduation requirements. If you do not have the required academic credits, NSCC offers a variety of credit courses through the Academic & Career Connections program. You gain practical experience during community and hospital pharmacy practicums. You have access to the same computer programs used in pharmacies throughout the province, allowing you to become proficient in the technical and practical skills they need in the workplace.
The Pharmacy Assistant diploma program also includes a field placement in a pharmaceutical setting. Work under the supervision of a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician and learn how to prepare, package, and store pharmaceuticals. Some of a Pharmacy Top Medical Laboratory Technician Program Assistant’s responsibilities include filling orders under a Pharmacist’s supervision, entering client information, identifying the correct mixture or breakdowns for prescriptions, and preparation and processing of paperwork for orders.

Diploma and advanced diploma programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit and senior math and science credits. Graduate certificate programs require completion of a diploma or degree program in the science field. This course will introduce students to the roles and responsibilities of Pharmacist and Pharmacy Assistants. It will also teach students the procedures to prepare and dispense medications, which include prescription interpretation skills, billing and inventory as well as medication safety. This course also addresses professionalism, work ethics and communication in the workplace.
According to the Environmental Scan of Pharmacy Technicians, September 2001, the word “technician” is often used to describe any non-pharmacist in a pharmacy who assists in dispensing. Any person may call himself or herself a technician without having completed technical certification. A Pharmacy Technicianprovides technical and clerical support to pharmacists. Unlike pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians cannot counsel patients and cannot take prescription information over the phone. The reason why private college have space is their tuition fees are many times more expensive than public college. There is a reason they have space and it has nothing to do with a compressed schedule.
The maximum number of allowable course exemptions for any candidate is 9.0 full-credit equivalents. Please note that this assessment cannot be done prior to the time admission is granted. Courses offered through the School of Continuing Studies at U of Toronto , which offers non-degree, non-credit courses, are not recognized.

This course introduces the fundamental pharmacological aspects of drugs and their interaction with various types of cells. Topics include routes of drug administration, factors affecting drug absorption and mechanism of action. Specific drugs for the central and autonomous nervous systems as well as the cardiocascular system are studied. Drugs for the endocrine system, therapeutic monitoring system and antiallergic, antihistaminic, antiseptic and disinfectants are also covered. Pharmaceutical Chemistry is an area of chemistry focused on synthesis, development, and study of molecules used in medicine and their interactions with biological agents. Topics include organic, inorganic and biochemistry which are an integral part of this course. This laboratory and lecture course highlights microbiological tests involved in pharmaceutical plant sanitation, product contamination, antibiotics, disinfectants and microbial growth and inactivation calculations.
If you have studied at an institution outside of Ontario, or in various other systems of study (e.g. AP/IB/GCE/CEGEP etc) please view the ‘Information for those who have studied outside Ontario (Non-Ontario and International)’ for general information. All courses are considered as full-credit (1.0) equivalents or half-credit (0.5) equivalents. For example, at some universities employing a 6.0 and 3.0 weighting system, there may also be courses at a weight of 4.0. For the purpose of determining course load in such systems, a 4.0 credit course would be a half credit (0.5) equivalent.

The student will learn about the measurements used in pharmacy, the metric and common systems of measurement, and the relationships between these two systems. Also covered is percentage and ratio strengths; isotonic medicines; thermometer conversions; atomic and molecular weights; and milliequivalents. The student will learn about the parts of a prescription; how to interpret pharmaceutical notations; and how to improve patient compliance. Prescribers of Drugs describes the healthcare professionals who are licensed to prescribe medication for the treatment of disease and illness. The student will also learn about medications that are prescribed for various conditions.
This course introduces students to the theory, instrumentation and laboratory procedures necessary to operate a modern, computerized Gas Chromatography instrument. This course is designed to teach students the basic methods used in microbiology to identify and enumerate bacteria. Students are introduced to the microbial world through practical experimentation, and acquire the essential tools to function in a laboratory setting.

Mohawk shall not be responsible for providing students with transportation to clinical placements. Clinical placement experience is provided in community pharmacies throughout Ontario. All accepted applicants are required to complete certain requirements prior to clinical placement and are responsible for the associated costs.
Students may be required to adjust personal work schedules and make alternative arrangements for transportation and parking, accommodation, and childcare. They will also be responsible for all costs associated with the assigned placement.
